Technique

To better appreciate my art pieces, it is helpful to understand the technique that I use to create them.

The process starts with a vision or idea that I want to express. These visions and ideas form at random, anytime, anywhere. It can be a cloudy sky, a twisted tree, or some movement of water that pops an idea into my head and then I transform that idea into a visual piece. Not all pieces turn out like I anticipated, but that is the nature of art. Some techniques are found quite by accident as… I am trying to create one thing, something else might show up.

Once I have an idea formed, I take a canvas or wood panel and apply texturing compound to create the image. I use all sorts of tools to apply the texture. I have used paint brushes, rollers, combs, sticks, and my hands to manipulate the texture compound until a suitable image appears. Some pieces have light to medium texture but others could be considered sculptural.

Once the texture compound had completely dried, I apply two layers of a base paint. This gives me my working surface to which I apply the color. Some areas are painted by brush but most are rubbed with glaze to allow layers of color to overlap. I use ordinary house paint for nearly all of my painting, but I do find a need for some specialty paints to create certain effects.

After the artwork has dried and I am satisfied with the end result, it is coated with a protective sealer. This gives the piece a uniform sheen as well as good protection for longevity.

If the piece needs to be framed, I will build one to fit and finish it in a color to complement.
